A bathroom is more than just a space for routines. It’s where the day begins—often bleary-eyed with coffee in hand—and where it ends, ideally with a warm shower, clean towels, and a soft landing.

At KSI, we design bathrooms the same way we design any room: with real life in mind. That means functionality comes first, but we never stop there. The goal is to create a space that’s grounded, calming, and easy to live in, with just the right amount of beauty. Think: unpretentious, earthy, and elevated—but not showy.

Here’s how to approach your bathroom design so it feels like a true retreat.

Begin with the Mood, Not the Materials

Before you open a single tile sample or save 43 photos on Pinterest, pause.

Ask yourself one simple question:How do I want to feel in this space?

Refreshed? Grounded? Inspired? Calm? Humor?!?

Let that emotional goal drive your design decisions. It sounds simple, but it changes everything. If you want your bathroom to feel like a slow Sunday morning, you’ll likely choose different finishes than someone looking for bold energy and drama. It helps filter

out trends and brings your design into alignment with your lifestyle.

Ground the Space with Honest Materials

Bathrooms are hardworking spaces—but that doesn’t mean they need to feel clinical or cold.

We love working with materials that patina with age and wear beautifully over time. Think unlacquered brass, natural stone, plaster walls, or even solid colors, like deep blues or heavy greens. . These finishes don’t just look beautiful—they feel warm and organic.

They're also forgiving. A little water spot or smudge doesn’t feel like a flaw; it feels like life.

Texture is Your Best Friend (Especially in Neutral Spaces)

Neutral doesn’t mean boring. In fact, we often avoid strong color in bathrooms so the space can feel timeless and clean—but never flat.

To bring it to life, we layer textures:

  • A fluted wood vanity

  • A woven pendant over the tub

  • Linen roman shades or a waffle curtain

  • Brushed or honed finishes on tile and stone

These subtle shifts create visual interest and tactile comfort. The result is a bathroom that feels rich and layered, even if the palette is soft and subdued.

Thoughtful Storage = Everyday Luxury

One of the best things you can do for yourself in a bathroom? Give everything a home.

Not just the pretty things—everything. Toothpaste, razors, backup TP, hair dryers, vitamins. Thoughtful storage doesn’t just make your bathroom look cleaner; it makes your mornings smoother.

We often recommend:

  • A floating vanity with hidden drawers

  • Recessed medicine cabinets that blend into the wall

  • A niche in the shower for soaps and shampoo

  • Woven baskets or lidded boxes for under-sink storage

Pro tip: If it’s easy to put away, it’s easier to keep tidy.

Light with Intention (and a Little Warmth)

Bad lighting can ruin even the most beautiful bathroom.

Instead of relying solely on bright overhead fixtures, we recommend layered lighting:

  • Sconces at face level for grooming (and kinder reflection)

  • Soft-glow overheads for general tasks

  • Dimmer switches to adjust the mood

  • Candles or even a small lamp for the occasional soak

The right lighting makes your bathroom feel like a place to pause, not just pass through.

Add Life (Literally)

If your bathroom has natural light, it’s the perfect place to add a little greenery. Humidity-loving plants like pothos, ferns, or eucalyptus not only thrive there, they also bring softness and life into the room.

Even a single branch in a ceramic vase on the vanity adds warmth. It’s a small detail with big impact.

Take Your Time—and Trust Your Gut

Designing a bathroom doesn’t have to be overwhelming—but it is a process.

If you can, don’t rush it. Give yourself time to live with samples, visualize layouts, and really consider how you move through the space. It’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to wait for the right sconce or splurge on the faucet that makes you smile every day.

Bathrooms aren’t just about tile and fixtures. They’re about how you feel when you step into them, morning and night.

At KSI, we believe your bathroom should feel as good as it looks.

We design with warmth, practicality, and soul—no wasted space, no unnecessary frills. Just honest materials, thoughtful function, and a clear connection to how you actually live.
